8.5. System of onboard diagnostics (OBD) - the principle of functioning and codes of malfunctions

Data on diagnostic units

Check of serviceability of functioning of components of systems of injection and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases is made by means of the universal digital measuring instrument (multimeter). Use of the digital measuring instrument is preferable for several reasons. First, on analog devices it is rather difficult (sometimes, it is impossible), to define result of the indication to within the 100-th and thousand shares while at inspection of the contours including electronic components in the structure, such accuracy is of particular importance. The second, not less important, the fact that the internal contour of a digital multimeter, has rather high impedance is the reason (internal resistance of the device makes about 10 million Ohms). As the voltmeter is connected to the checked chain in parallel, the accuracy of measurement of subjects is higher, than smaller parasitic current will pass through actually device. This factor is not essential at measurement of rather high values of tension (9 ÷ 12 V), however becomes defining at diagnostics of the elements giving low-voltage signals, such as, for example, oxygen sensor where it is about measurement of shares of volt.

The most convenient devices for diagnostics of control systems of the engine of modern models of cars are manual readers of skanerny type. Scanners of the first generation serve for reading of codes of malfunctions of the OBD-I systems. Before application the reader should be checked for compliance of model and year of release of the checked car. Some scanners are multipurpose, at the expense of a possibility of change of a cartridge depending on model of the diagnosed car (Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc.), others are tied to requirements of the regional authorities and intended for use in certain regions of the world (Europe, Asia, the USA, etc.), for more details see below.


With introduction to production to meeting requirements of the last legislations for environmental protection of system of onboard diagnostics of the second generation (OBD-II) readers of a special design began to be issued. Some producers marketed the scanners intended for use by amateur mechanics in house conditions, - ask in shops of automobile accessories.

In spite of the fact that reading of codes of malfunctions in the OBD II systems is not possible without use of the special scanner, in the present Chapter the description of some elementary checks of separate components of system is given below.


Parallel observation of parameters of signals, resistance and tension in all chains of management is possible by means of the splitter included consistently in the socket of the control unit of the engine. At the same time on the switched-off, working engine or during the movement of the car, measurement of parameters of signals on splitter plugs is performed from what the conclusion about possible defects is drawn.

Special diagnostic scanners (Pointer) or testers (Retriever) with a certain cartridge (if are provided), a universal cable and the socket are used to diagnostics of electronic systems of the engine, automatic transmission, ABS, SRS. Besides, it is possible to use the expensive specialized automobile diagnostic computer which is specially developed for full diagnostics of the majority of systems of modern cars to this purpose (for example, ADC2000 of Launch HiTech, or ESA 560, FSA, BEA of BOSH), or the ordinary computer with a special cable and the program OBD II browser.

Some scanners, besides usual operations of diagnostics, allow, at connection with the personal computer to print out the schematic diagrams of an eletrooborudovaniye which are stored in memory of the control unit (if are put), to program anticreeping system, to observe signals in car chains in real time.

In principle, reading of the codes of malfunctions which are written down in memory of system of self-diagnostics on some cars can be made also on a control lamp of refusals (MIL)/" Check the engine" on the control panel.

The scanner only reads out the malfunctions brought memory and clears memory of malfunctions. Besides the scanner supports only the ISO protocol. The tester in addition can make active and show the current data and supports the SAE and ISO protocols.

All cartridges for a tester can be used also in the scanner. At the same time functions will be limited only to reading and cleaning of memory.

General information and precautionary measures

Electronic systems of injection and decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases in the course of the functioning at operation of the car interact with various other systems which are responsible for efficiency of return of the engine. All listed systems turn on a set of information sensors and the electronic module of management (ECM/PCM) in the structure.

Systems of this sort can be compared on the structure to the central nervous system of a human body where a role of a brain is played by the electronic module of management, and information sensors act as the nervous terminations. Sensors send signals to PCM which analyzes the arriving information and develops response commands for adjustment of the corresponding working parameters.

Let's review the specific example allowing to imagine more clearly the principle of functioning of system: the oxygen sensor which is built in in system of release continuously traces the level of contents O2 in a stream of the fulfilled engine gases. If percentage of oxygen considerably deviates some control value entered into memory of system, PCM immediately obtains the relevant information and on the basis of its analysis develops the corresponding command for adjustment of duration of opening of injectors of injection of fuel, carrying out thereby adjustment of composition of air-fuel mix. Duration of the described procedural cycle makes fractions of a second that provides high reactivity of functioning of system. As a result, efficiency of return of the engine is constantly maintained at the greatest possible level.

In order to avoid failure of the electronic module of management (ECM/PCM) before disconnecting from it an electrical wiring without fail switch off ignition and disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action!


For simplification of introduction of probes of a tester to the contact ECM/PCM socket when checking entrance/output signals of the last from the socket the terminal holder follows.

Making detachment/connection of an electrical wiring of the module of management try not to bend and not to break off contact plugs.

At voltage measurement of food functioning under control of PCM components do not allow short circuit among themselves of tester plugs at all, - short circuit in a chain of PCM can lead to an irreversible exit of the last out of operation.

System of onboard self-diagnostics of the first generation OBD-I

General information

It is not necessary to be mistaken, assuming, the system consisting of a set of various information sensors and operated by the electronic processor hardly gives in to diagnostics. All refusals and violations of functioning of components of system are fixed in electronic memory of the module of management in the form of special digital codes. Reading of codes can be made by connection to the diagnostic DLC socket of the special scanner or the digital voltmeter (see the first subsection of the present Section).

The driver is notified on any violations of functioning of components of systems of injection/decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases by means of operation built in in a combination of devices of a control lamp of refusals /" Check the engine". If failure had temporality and the module of management registers return of system to normal functioning, the control lamp is disconnected. Moreover, if at operation of a control lamp to switch off ignition, then after start of the engine the lamp is activated only in case of repeated registration of refusal by system of diagnostics again.

For check of serviceability of a condition of a control lamp its short-term operation happens every time when turning the ignition key in position of ON. In the absence of violations of functioning of control systems of engine/decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases the lamp has to go out already 5 seconds later. If at inclusion of ignition of short-term operation of a control lamp does not occur, check a condition of an electrical wiring and a safety lock of its electric chain, besides, make sure of integrity of filament actually of a lamp.

Control lamp of refusals /" Check the engine" has to work also at short circuit on the mass of the plug of the socket of correction of a corner of an advancing of ignition.


Remember that codes register refusals of electric contours in total, but the separate components which are not their part. So, presence at memory of the module of management of a code No. 14 says about malfunction in a chain of the sensor of provision of a butterfly valve (TPS) that it at all optional demonstrates failure actually of the sensor. At identification of causes of failure especially close attention should be paid to a condition of the corresponding electrical wiring and quality of its contact connections. To exclude probability of refusal of a working element of a chain, or to make sure of it it is possible by substitution of obviously serviceable component.

Codes of a set of various malfunctions can be stored in the processor memory of system of onboard diagnostics (PCM) at the same time. Delivery of codes when reading is made in ascending order of their identification numbers and does not depend on an order of their entering in memory in any way.

Before starting reading of diagnostic codes, make sure that tension developed by the battery conforms to standard requirements (see the Head Elektrooborudovaniye of the engine).

Remember that at disconnection of an electrical wiring from the battery or the controller of a control system of the engine there is an automatic cleaning of memory of OBD!

Before connection of the reader to the diagnostic DLC socket and shutdown do not forget to turn it the ignition key in position of OFF. Performance of these operations at the included ignition can lead to input in the processor memory of false diagnostic codes (also control lamp of refusals / at the same time will work" Check the engine".

Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the scanner

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

The description of the procedure of reading of codes from memory of ECM by means of the Mitsubishi MUT-II scanner is given below. When using devices of production of other manufacturers strictly adhere to the enclosed instructions!

1. Connect the scanner to the diagnostic DLC socket located at the left under the dashboard (in case of need previously uncover access).

On the Galant models the DLC socket can be in a ware box, to the right of its castle assembly.


2. Working according to instructions of manufacturers consider and write down the data issued by the scanner.
3. Make diagnostics of a condition of the corresponding elements and their electric contours, execute necessary recovery repair / replace defective components.
4. Turn a key in position of OFF, then again include ignition.
5. Make cleaning of the processor memory of system of onboard diagnostics (see below).
6. Having repeated the procedure of reading, make sure of presence at memory of an OBD code of normal functioning of system.


Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the analog voltmeter

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. At the corresponding complete set uncover access to the DLC socket.

2. Connect the analog voltmeter between plugs of grounding and an output signal of the OBD DLC socket.

3. Include ignition.
4. Consider and write down the sequence of signals given by the voltmeter.
5. Make diagnostics of a condition of the corresponding elements and their electric contours, execute necessary recovery repair / replace defective components.
6. Make cleaning of the processor memory of system of onboard diagnostics (see below).


Processor memory cleaning

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

When cleaning the processor memory with use of the reader of skanerny type follow instructions of manufacturers of the device.

1. Switch off ignition.
2. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action! Not less than 1 minute later restore connection of the battery.

3. Include ignition.
4. Having performed the procedure of reading, make sure of presence at memory of an OBD code of normal functioning of system.

System of onboard self-diagnostics of the second generation OBD-II

General information

The onboard processor (PCM) is responsible for serviceability of functioning of components of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases, cooling system fans, can carry out corrections of a corner of an advancing of ignition and management of working parameters of automatic transmission. Submission to one module of management of power supply systems and ignitions allows to carry out thin adjustments of composition of air-fuel mix under any service conditions of the engine. The general principles of functioning of PCM are described in the second subsection of the present Section.

Besides functions of management of PCM carries out also continuous monitoring of a condition of components of control systems of engine/decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases that does it by the central knot of system of onboard self-diagnostics. Codes of electric refusals of various contours of the corresponding subsystems and elements register in the processor memory.

It is necessary to notice that the system of onboard diagnostics of the second generation is not capable to register the violations having the mechanical or hydrodynamic nature, however refusals of this sort can be registered oposredstvenno due to the impact exerted on functioning of electric knots. So, OBD is purely physically not capable to reveal such defect as partial violation of passability of an injector, nevertheless, the result of this violation will be permanently recorded upon impoverishment of air-fuel mix, indirect registered by the oxygen sensor. Based on the analysis the signals arriving from the O2 sensor, the module of management of system will carry out record in the processor memory of a code of the corresponding diagnostic code.

Distinctive feature of systems of self-diagnostics of the second generation (OBD-II) is the organization in them the adaptive logic allowing to make dynamic management of functioning of system of injection of fuel. This feature allows to compensate automatically wear and fluctuations of parameters of components of a power supply system. So, at steadily working engine the module of management monitors a trend to impoverishment or enrichment of air-fuel mix and takes the corresponding steps for correction of its structure, seeking to maintain stoichiometric number 14.7:1 constantly. The correcting parameters are brought in the special processor memory, fixed in it and remain available at the subsequent cycles of operation of the car (food of memory is carried out directly from the battery and does not depend on position of the lock of ignition).

Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the scanner

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1 The scanner is connected to the diagnostic socket (DLC) located at the left under the dashboard.

2. The first step of diagnostics of system is always poll of memory of the module of management. At this stage the general nature of refusals is defined, and consecutive reading of codes allows to elicit the fact of removal them from memory.

3. For reading of codes it can be used both the branded scanner of the manufacturing company of the car, and scanners of third-party producers, - strictly adhere to instructions of manufacturers of the device.


Reading of codes of malfunctions by means of the voltmeter

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Find under the dashboard the diagnostic DLC socket at the left.
2. On models since 1996 the issue provided a possibility of switching between arbitration and federal formats of reading of codes. Usually on the models equipped with system of onboard self-diagnostics of the second generation (OBD-II) a possibility of reading of codes on tension throws ("flashes") on plugs of the DLC socket it is not provided and use of the scanner is an indispensable condition, however, on the Mitsubishi models the present possibility is realized.
3. In view of global standardization of the OBD-II codes their decoding considerably becomes simpler. When reading codes by means of the voltmeter (on tension throws on the DLC plugs) the first two positions of designation are not used. In view of the fact that the transmission of the car is among components of the transmission line, codes of its refusals also begin with R.'s letter Besides, as coincidence between numbers of the Mitsubishi and SAE codes is absent, the code figure following a letter also does not matter.

4. Codes can be schitana on throws of an arrow of the voltmeter connected to the DLC socket. Each code is highlighted by a series from three groups of "flashes". So, to the P0753 code there corresponds the group of" seven flashes" which groups of five and three "flashes" directly follow. Highlighting of the next code begins through a short pause. Duration of all "flashes" is identical, the exception makes only zero designated by a throw of tension of bigger duration; so the P0702 code (short circuit in TPS chain) will look as follows: seven normal "flashes", one long, then two more normal.

5. Reading of codes is made as follows:

· Make sure of serviceability of a condition of an electrical wiring and its contact connections;
· Prepare paper and a pencil for conducting records;
· Find the diagnostic DLC socket under the car dashboard at the left;
· Start the engine and make on the car a short trip for transition of system to the self-diagnostics mode;
· Park the car, having left the engine working at single turns;
· Connect the voltmeter (analog or digital) to plugs of the diagnostic DLC socket, - a positive wire to the plug 1, negative to the plug 4;
· Watching throws shooters/jumps of indications, consider the codes of malfunctions which are written down in the processor memory (see below). Write down results; Sometimes perhaps also reading of codes on flashes of a control lamp "Check the engine" after short circuit of the plug of 1 socket for the case.
· Make necessary corrections, clear the processor memory and, having repeated check, make sure of absence in memory of codes.


Processor memory cleaning

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Cleaning of the processor memory after elimination of malfunctions has to is made without fail.
2. For cleaning the GST scanner or a special tester is used.
3. For cleaning of memory of ESM connect the scanner to system and in an apportion of its menu choose the CLEARING COEDS function ("Removal of codes"). Further follow the instructions highlighted on the device. Alternatively cleaning of memory of system can be made by shutdown of the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action!

Shutdown of the battery also leads to removal of settings of the receiver for favourite radio stations.

In order to avoid damage of ESM its shutdown and connection should be made only at the switched-off ignition!
